Untitled (2009)
Another post in the spirit of Valentine's Day. It's easy to become grumpy at the spectacle that this day has evolved into. For example, in the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Joel (played by Jim Carrey) writes the following in his diary:
"Random thoughts for Valentine's Day, 2004. Today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies. To make people feel like crap."
Despite once working for one of those dreaded companies, I do my best to have fun with this day, regardless of whether there is a romantic interest in my life or not.
For example, in 2009 I painted the small untilted piece pictured above and gave it to my youngest daughter as a Valentine's Day gift. Seeing it on display in her home the other day (she is an adult now, with her own place) gave me great joy. Instantly, I remembered the good feeling I had while creating this and giving it to her, but I could not so instantly remember what my romantic status was that year. Even if I did feel like crap about whether I had a date or not for V-Day 2009, this little piece will forever remind me that there are so many forms of love worth celebrating, not only on this day but on any given day of the year.
